When? :

The area is open year-round.

Best Times to Visit is during fall, winter, and spring when the temperatures are low.

Summer can be excessively hot, even for a short hike.

Due note 1:

All the landscape is exposed to the sun; Bring enough water for your hike (2-3 liter per person for half a day hike), sun protection, and wear sturdy shoes

Due note 2:

The park is fee-free and managed in part by Boulder City Parks & Recreation, with facilities like parking, restrooms, shaded picnic spots, and a gazebo.

Due note 3:

There are restrooms in the main road entering the park.

Due note 4:

You can do long hikes here but some of the trails are relatively short and easy and Family-friendly during the cooler month of the year.

Due note 5:

You can visit the nearby Nature Discovery Trail and Rock Garden.

Due note 6:

Bootleg Canyon is a preferred destination for mountain bikers and regularly hosts mountain bike competitions and races. Hikers should stay alert for mountain bikers and stick to designated paths.

Due note 7:

Last time I was here the zip line was out of service.

My thoughts:

This was a fun afternoon hike not so far from Las Vegas.

The trails are clear, the open desert landscape, and the view from the 2 viewing points to Lake Mead and Las Vegas Valley is rewording.

During all our weekend afternoon stay we saw only one other hiker from far away so we had this vast place to ourselves.

The Hike:

There are many miles of trails in this area and you can create your own hike path.

We decided to combine the hike in the lower section and that climb up to the viewing points.

We drove into the park main road and parked our car at the bend offroad parking area.

From the parking lot we started by heading down on Inner Caldera trail heading north west.

After about 0.8 mile the trail heading east and circling the base of the hill.

From here we took a trail heading south east, we connected to Boy Scout trail after 1.8 miles from the TH.

After 0.3-mile we turned hard left into the trail leading to River Mountain lookout.

From here it is a 0.6 mile of climbing and you will reach the lookout.

The view to the east is impressive. You can see the surrounding mountains and lake mead area.

From here we went back, connected to the main road and took the trail leading to Peek Overlook.

On the nearby mountain top you can see the large airplane navigation facility, below you can see the Boulder City area. Here is the location of the zip-line but it does look like it is not operating for some time.

After enjoying the view to the plans below we went down on the same trail, reconnected to the road and hiked on the road down to our car.

Overall 5 miles with 900ft of elevation gain and it will take you 3 hours to complete, fun afternoon activity.
